In memoriam: Helmut Gneuss

posted on March 7, 2023

The staff of the Dictionary of Old English mourn the passing of Professor Helmut Gneuss (Munich), who died on 25 February 2023 at the age of 95. Professor Gneuss was a member of the DOE’s International Advisory Committee since the project’s foundation. A generous scholar and true friend of the DOE, he continued to advise the project’s editors and send detailed comments on new entries long after his retirement. His immense learning and great kindness will be sorely missed.

Please see the obituary written by Profs. Ursula Lenker and Lucia Kornexl on the website of the University of Munich. We thank them for their generous request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the DOE in Prof. Gneuss’s memory.
